Hotel Astoria 7 San Sebastian

Accomodation in San Sebastian is hard to find. I don’t mean that in the sense of hotels and hostels are hidden away, it’s hard to find reasonably priced places to stay during your trip. Many of the old town locations are incredibly expensive and understandably so with many being close to the beautiful La Concha beach.

We chose a hotel slightly out of the way – and by slightly I mean a 30 minute walk from the old town. Hotel Astoria 7, however, is beautiful and quiet. A four star hotel within easy reach of the main bus station and surrounded by handy supermarkets, bars and restaurants.

Buses also are available nearby to whisk you uptown but if you prefer the scenic route and/or the exercise, then it’s an easy stroll up to the hub of pintxo bars. The hotel follows a film theme with many Hollywood greats plastered across the walls. We were staying in a room overlooked by Glenn Ford.

The rooms are beautiful here. Smart and stylish with everything you could need – minus a bath. The shower more than makes up for the absence of a tub though. The bed was huge! A selection of pillows and cushions is at your mercy too, although finding the right combination for a comfortable sleep sometimes proved tricky.

The best part about this hotel is that it’s a quiet hotel. San Sebastian town centre can be a lively place at random times of the day and night. Here at Astoria 7, you are away from all that. It really makes all the difference with good quality soundproofing too. Builders were whacking away at a structure across the road but you could barely hear it.

Hotel Astoria 7 were also kind enough to offer us a free bottle of red wine and a kind note wishing us a happy anniversary. A really kind touch. Also, there’s a free glass of wine awaiting you in the Bistroteka downstairs.

We headed down to the smart, modern canteen area which houses a bar serving drinks and traditional Basque pintxos. The wine was decent and the free wifi worked superbly downstairs, although a little more intermittent in the rooms.

Overall, we loved the hotel. Astoria 7 is a superb choice for anyone wanting a peaceful stay in beautiful San Sebastian. The total bill for 4 nights came to £741 (€823.32) which is around the price of a single night in the grand hotels beside the bay. Tremendous value for a fantastic stay.
