Staying Cool at The Rotunda, Birmingham
150 New Street, Birmingham
Birmingham comes alive during late November and throughout December with the arrival of the Frankfurt Christmas Market. Living just half an hour away from Birmingham makes a trip over to partake in the festivities almost irresistible so over we went for a night in the city staying in a rather unique location – The Rotunda.
We had passed The Rotunda many times without actually knowing what it was. This large circular building stands beside The Bullring shopping centre overlooking central Birmingham with a view that stretches for miles across the West Midlands. Location wise it’s perfect for the market as once you step outside the building you step straight into the scent of roast bratwurst, beer and sauerkraut.
Parking for the hotel is ideal as any car park around the main shopping centre under the ‘Bullring’ name is valid for hotel parking. We wondered how this would work given that we had taken a ticket on entry to the car park but all is easy – the hotel simply provide you a ticket on check out to use at the exit in exchange for your entry ticket.
The hotel is actually a resident’s building too and instructs its guests to follow strict rules relating to noise and parties – both of which will land you in trouble and could terminate your stay without refund. After checking in we got our front door key to what would be our apartment for the night – a large room on the upper floors overlooking the city.
Entering the apartment we instantly were wowed. There’s a kitchen with cookware, a fridge, oven and grill – which you need to turn on at the wall. A spacious lounge with floor to ceiling windows giving the most amazing panoramic of Birmingham. A spacious bathroom and bedroom featuring a large comfy bed – this is the life!
We headed out for the evening to take in the wonders of the market and have a cocktail down by the canalside. On return to the hotel we flicked on sky tv and relaxed on the comfortable sofa and soon after called it a night. The bed is one of the most comfortable that we have ever come across and provided a flawless night’s sleep. The advantage of staying here too is that it’s so quiet, ideal for a peaceful break.
If you are heading to Birmingham you just have to stay here. Rooms are available at £99 ($130.50 US) per night which makes it an ideal place to stop over to enjoy the Christmas Market or even an event at the nearby NIA or NEC. Every part of the experience was perfect, even down to the cooking facilities which we took advantage of in the morning before check-out. A very different experience but a very pleasant one.
