Mö-Grill, Hamburg

What is Germany’s main contribution to the world’s street food scene? Currywurst of course. Many people can’t get their heads around a bratwurst sausage sliced up and slathered in curry ketchup but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Mö-Grill came out top of the places to try this German speciality so we headed down to the main street at Mönckebergstraße to sample Hamburg’s version of this classic snack. Interestingly and unexpectedly, Mö-Grill have stands set up either side of the street right outside the U-bahn station at Mönckebergstraße.

Nothing says popular like two stalls exactly the same both filled with customers. Standing room only is the way it goes here. Tables are scattered around the stalls plus a small bar around the area that everyone places their order. Why you would choose to eat at that particular area i’ll never know.

If you don’t want to run the risk of a sausage in the face, you can take your currywurst over to the tables. The ordering system is simple and quick. As is customary in Germany, their grasp of English is impeccable so you will have no problems ordering.

Literally the moment I got the word ‘currywurst’ out of my mouth, my plate arrived. This is a well oiled machine and a prime example of stereotypical German efficiency. I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t do fries but after looking at the reviews criticising speed in the past, maybe that was why.

There’s not just currywurst to be had at Mö-Grill. Many locals decided that a foot-long bratwurst in a comically small-by-comparison bun was to be their lunch. The prices are very fair with a jumbo currywurst coming in at €5.90 complete with a bread roll and extra large bratwurst sliced up in the famous curry sauce.

In terms of location, Mö-Grill couldn’t really be better placed. A superb budget option for any traveller wanting a decent snack on the go. Both bars do get very busy during the lunchtime period but the queue moves super fast. Make sure you don’t miss out on the ultimate street food when in Hamburg.
