Superbude Hotel and Hostel, St Pauli

Hostel? Well, that’s a new one on me. We have never stayed in a hostel during our travels so this was going to be a first. The Superbude in St Pauli was to be our base for the first leg of our stay in Hamburg.

St Pauli is a colourful area of the city. A complete contrast to the normally orderly neighbourhoods in cities across Germany. This has a punk edge to it. The local football side, FC St Pauli are right at the heart of this community. Graffiti-clad buildings and dingy bars are the norm in this part of Hamburg. Relax though, it’s completely safe.

The Superbude is closest to Feldstraße U-bahn station, although we decided to walk it from St Pauli U-bahn – it was some walk! The hotel is rated as a one star in what looks to be a former apartment block, from the outside it did look very inviting.

The quirky nature of this place reveals itself in full the second that you walk through the door. Old bikes, artwork, friendly staff with laid back attitudes along with crates of the local Astra beer are all part of the service. A welcome drink is also included on check-in for whenever you like.

We were a little early arriving so we took the option to leave our bags with the front desk. There is an option to use lockers or use a sort of bike lock below the desk. We chose the bike lock option but on return the desk was unmanned and it could have resulted in our goods being stolen. Definitely go for the locker option.

The staff here are so friendly and interact with everyone in good spirits. There is an area by the check in desk that has food that you can pay for there and then or leave a note with your room number on it. Also, there is an area for chilling and having a coffee or using the internet.

We were thinking, as we headed up to our room, that we would be sharing facilities with other guests such as bathrooms. Any notions that this is a hostel were quickly dispelled as we opened the door to a spacious and unique room.

Having your own shower and toilet is awesome. Having a shower and toilet plus a well stocked, spacious bathroom is equally brilliant. The only slight drawback is that there is just one general soap for everything. The hotel do sell soap and other washing products downstairs by the desk though if you do get desperate.

The room also came with a decent sized wall mounted TV, a fan, good central heating and a stool made out of beer crates and a pair of jeans – very unique. The hotel kindly gave us a pack containing a welcome card, some stickers, a soundboard for Hamburg attractions and a city guide. Excellent service.

Our bed had two separate duvets, which solves any potential quilt-stealing arguments.  The mattress though, for me, was a little too firm. It’s durable for a couple of nights but I couldn’t do a week on it. The views out into the street from the window were beautiful.

Wi-Fi in this place is top quality. I would never have expected such rapid internet from a hotel with a single star. We really were beginning to love spending time in this environment, there’s so much here to bring a smile to your face – where else can you hang your jacket on a toilet plunger?

The location of the hotel really does tick a lot of boxes. We spent a lot of time in the Rindermarkthalle, a 10 minute walk away. With a huge choice of supermarkets and food stalls it is ideal for an easy meal or to stock up on supplies.

Often we would shy away from a place like Superbude but that opinion has changed drastically. Many people from old to young stay at this hotel and we never had anything other than a great experience. The staff are lovely and the location is perfect. Superbude really is a super choice when in Hamburg.
